Peripheral Nerve Block Injection

What are Peripheral Nerve Block Inections?

Peripheral nerve blocks involve the injection of an anesthetic, sometimes combined with a steroid, near a specific peripheral nerve to interrupt pain signals. This is used to treat pain localized to areas such as the arms, legs, or face. The procedure is performed with ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance to ensure precision. Relief may last from several hours to several weeks, and the treatment can be repeated as needed.

Stop pain in its tracks—targeted relief where it matters most.

Reasons For Treatment

  • Localized nerve pain (neuropathy, neuralgia)
  • Pain following surgery or injury
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
  • Diagnostic evaluation of nerve-related pain
  • Cancer-related nerve pain
  • Non-opioid alternative for chronic pain
  • Nerve entrapment syndromes (e.g., carpal tunnel, tarsal tunnel)

How To Prepare

Wear loose clothing that allows access to the area being treated. Eat a light meal beforehand unless instructed to fast. Inform your provider if you are on blood thinners, have any allergies, or have a pacemaker. If sedation is used, fasting for 6 hours and arranging transportation are required.

What to Expect After the Treatment

You may experience temporary numbness, tingling, or weakness in the treated area. These effects usually wear off within a few hours. Pain relief can begin shortly after and may continue for days or weeks depending on the condition treated. Avoid intense activity in the area for at least 24 hours. Contact your provider if you experience severe discomfort, infection signs, or unexpected side effects.

Possible Side Effects

  • Temporary numbness or weakness
  • Mild soreness or bruising at the injection site
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Infection (rare)
  • Allergic reaction to anesthetic or steroid (rare)
  • Nerve damage (extremely rare)
