Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation (RFT)

What is Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation (RFT)?

Radiofrequency Thermocoagulation (RFT) is a minimally invasive procedure used to manage chronic pain by targeting and deactivating specific nerves using controlled heat. A specialized needle is placed near the affected nerve under imaging guidance, and radiofrequency energy is applied to interrupt pain signal transmission.

Longer-term pain relief—precise, effective, and non-surgical.

Reasons For Treatment

  • Chronic neck, mid-back, or lower back pain
  • Facet joint arthritis
  • Previous success with diagnostic medial branch block
  • Non-responsive to physical therapy or medication
  • Desire to avoid surgical intervention
  • Preference for non-opioid pain management

How To Prepare

Fasting may be required for 6 hours before the procedure if sedation is used. Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid applying lotions to the treatment area. Inform your provider of all current medications, especially blood thinners or diabetes medications. Arrange for a ride home.

What To Expect After Treatment

You may experience mild soreness, muscle twitching, or a sunburn-like sensation at the treatment site. These usually resolve within a few days. Pain relief often begins within 1–2 weeks and can last from 6 months to over a year. Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous activity for 48 hours. Monitor for signs of infection or worsening pain and notify your provider if needed.

Possible Side Effects

  • Mild swelling or bruising
  • Temporary numbness or tingling
  • Soreness at the procedure site
  • Infection (rare)
  • Bleeding or nerve injury (very rare)
  • Allergic reaction to medication (rare)
