Cervical and lumbar Diagnostic
Medial Branch Nerve Block Injection

What are Cervical and Lumbar Diagnostic Medial Branch Nerve Block Injections?

This diagnostic injection is used to identify whether the facet joints in your spine are the source of your chronic neck or back pain. A small amount of anesthetic is injected near the medial branch nerves that supply sensation to the facet joints. If your pain improves after the block, it indicates that the facet joints are involved and may respond to longer-lasting treatments like radiofrequency ablation.

Pinpoint the root of your spinal pain—precisely and non-surgically.

Reasons For Treatment

  • Unexplained chronic neck or lower back pain
  • Suspected facet joint inflammation
  • Diagnostic step before radiofrequency ablation
  • Back or neck pain aggravated by twisting or bending
  • Failed response to other spinal injections or therapies

How To Prepare

You may eat normally before the procedure unless otherwise instructed. Wear comfortable clothing, and avoid applying any creams or lotions near your back or neck. Let your provider know about all medications, especially blood thinners. You may want to arrange for a ride home, especially if sedation is used.

What To Expect After Treatment

Temporary numbness, mild soreness, or relief from pain may occur shortly after the injection. You may be asked to monitor your pain levels and report how your symptoms respond to help guide future treatment. Light activities can resume the same day, but avoid heavy lifting or twisting for 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

  • Mild soreness or swelling at the injection site
  • Temporary numbness or weakness
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Infection (rare)
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Allergic reaction (rare)
