Knee Viscosupplementation

What is Knee Viscosupplementation?

Knee viscosupplementation is a non-surgical treatment designed to relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis. This procedure involves injecting hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance that lubricates joints—directly into the knee joint. As osteoarthritis progresses, the joint fluid loses its natural shock-absorbing properties. Viscosupplementation helps restore this lubrication, reducing pain and improving mobility.

This is an excellent option for individuals who are not yet ready for knee surgery or who have not found relief from medications and physical therapy. Our free screening helps determine whether you’re a good candidate for this treatment.

Say goodbye to knee pain and get moving again—without surgery or downtime.

Reasons For Treatment

  • Mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis
  • Persistent knee pain that limits mobility
  • Poor response to oral pain medications or physical therapy
  • Alternative to corticosteroid injections
  • Delaying or avoiding knee replacement surgery
  • Joint stiffness and loss of flexibility
  • Inflammation due to cartilage degeneration
  • Pain while walking, standing, or climbing stairs

How To Prepare

Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the knee. You can eat and drink as usual on the day of your appointment. Avoid applying lotions or creams to your legs. Let your provider know if you have any allergies, particularly to eggs or bird products, as some formulas are derived from these sources. Though you can drive yourself to and from the appointment, you may want to arrange a ride if your knee typically feels unstable after injections.

What To Expect After Treatment

After the injection, you may experience mild discomfort, swelling, or a feeling of fullness in the knee. These effects typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours. Applying ice and resting the joint can help ease any discomfort. Most patients begin to feel relief within a few days to a few weeks. You should avoid strenuous activity or impact-related exercise for 1 to 2 days. Walking and light movement are encouraged. If you notice increased redness, warmth, severe pain, or fever, contact your provider, as these may be signs of infection.

Possible Side Effects

  • Mild swelling or stiffness at the injection site
  • Temporary knee pain or discomfort
  • Warmth or redness around the joint
  • Joint fluid accumulation (rare)
  • Allergic reaction to the injected substance (rare)
  • Infection at the injection site (very rare)
  • Bleeding or bruising around the knee
  • Increased inflammation in the first 24–48 hours (usually self-limiting)
