Stellate Ganglion Nerve Block Injection

What are Stellate Ganglion Nerve Block Injections?

A stellate ganglion block is a minimally invasive injection that targets the sympathetic nerves in the neck to help relieve pain and symptoms associated with conditions such as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), PTSD, and chronic head or upper extremity pain. The procedure involves injecting an anesthetic near the stellate ganglion, a bundle of nerves located in the front of the neck, under ultrasound or fluoroscopic guidance.

Regain control over pain and stress-related symptoms with this breakthrough nerve block.

Reasons For Treatment

  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) affecting upper limbs
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom management
  • Chronic head, neck, or arm pain
  • Vascular insufficiency in the upper extremities
  • Diagnostic evaluation of sympathetic nervous system involvement
  • Treatment-resistant anxiety and sleep disorders (off-label)

How To Prepare

You may be asked to fast for 6 hours prior to your appointment, especially if sedation is planned. Wear loose clothing and avoid using perfumes or lotions on your neck. Arrange for transportation to and from your appointment. Inform your provider if you are taking blood thinners or have any health conditions that may affect the procedure.

What To Expect After Treatment

You may experience temporary hoarseness, a drooping eyelid, nasal stuffiness, or a warm sensation in the face or arm—these are expected and typically resolve within hours. Pain relief can occur within minutes or develop gradually over the next few days. Avoid driving or strenuous activity for the rest of the day. Monitor for signs of difficulty breathing, severe swelling, or prolonged numbness and report them to your provider.

Possible Side Effects

  • Hoarseness or voice changes
  • Drooping eyelid (Horner’s Syndrome – temporary)
  • Facial flushing or nasal congestion
  • Soreness or bruising at the injection site
  • Infection or bleeding (rare)
  • Difficulty swallowing (temporary)
  • Allergic reaction (rare)
